26th November 2024: Ruby’s Cafe Bulli Beach

Another very warm day predicted so it was quickly agreed a nice run down the coast and perhaps Old Ruby’s at Bulli might be a good destination. I’d made the mistake of suggesting it so immediately became a unanimous Ride Leader. So down the OPH, Picton Rd, Mt Kembla because Mt Kiera was having road works and possible delays, back through Wollongong, along the Memorial Drive to Bulli and Ruby’s. Simple.

Things went bad as soon as we turned towards Wollongong and headed north. We missed every red light in Wollongong, along the OPH to the Memorial Drive turnoff and then every red light along Memorial Drive. Every light. The speed limit along there is 80 or 90. We couldn’t get up to that speed before we had to slow and stop for the next set of lights. But eventually we got to Ruby’s started to park our bikes only to discover Ruby’s was closed for a new coat of paint being applied. So most of us walked across to the Bulli Beach Café, some rode, and some departed to go back towards Sydney for another venue. The café was I thought going to be packed but it was virtually empty and after getting great service we all enjoyed a cuppa and a nice sea breeze.

Back on the bikes heading north on the coast road, that was after we missed the lights, again! And so it continued. We got stopped at lights I’d never noticed before but the one that really upset me was when on the Sea Cliff Bridge we got stopped by a temporary set, put there I firmly believe just to upset me. Passed that and around to Stanwell Bottoms and another bloody set of Stop/Go. Up into the Nasho, the vast majority going all the way thru to Audley but The Smifs and I turned off and up to Waterfall where once on the Princes Hwy again I refused to stop for anything. Overall a good opportunity to check the clutch settings on my old bike as I made a start from each stop, then check the brake settings as I made my way to the next stop… But with 12 in the group, a pleasant morning and good company.
